The BIG programme supports the delivery of a pathway which reflects the principles of functional motor development and Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) in young children as well as addressing the acquisition of badminton skills. BIG has been produced with the vision of focussing in the early years on developing high quality movement skills which are then refined and reinforced as racket skills and tactics are introduced and developed.

  • BIG phase 1: Establishing primary movements (Gait, squat, lunge, push, pull/rotate, flexion)
  • BIG Phase 2: Mastering the components of functional development.
  • BIG Phase 3: Generalised and specialised movement skill acquisition.
  • BIG Phase 3a: Generalised – Traditional agility, balance, co-ordination and speed, strength and quickness, referenced with developing a comprehensive movement programme.
  • BIG Phase 3b: Specialised – Introducing technical and sport specific foundation criteria.
  • BIG Phase 4a: Getting stronger, fitter, faster and better.
  • BIG Phase 4b: Developing technical and tactical ability.
  • BIG Phase 5: Competitive play, dedicated training.

To support the BIG programme, Bisi will provide a series of game ideas and activities which will give teachers and coaches plenty of ideas to bring fun, enjoyment and learning to their sessions. Each pack is colour coded to the BIG phase they support.

Bisi Pack A: Early introduction to badminton activity

Bisi Pack B: Introducing racket skills.

Bisi Pack C: Establishing games

Bisi Pack D: Routines and set plays.

Teacher training in delivering the BIG programme is available through a modular training programme conducted by BADMINTON England tutors.

The BADMINTON England Junior Helper Award (BJHA) is aimed at young people year 9 and above (13 years and over). This new course follows a 6 hour programme and covers team work and leadership, managing a session of activity, organising, managing and planning an event. The course is presented as a series of workshops focussing on each aspect and is designed to attractivelty present the early stages of leadership with an accent on fun and information.

The BJHA supports both the SLUK level 1 on Sports leadership and the SLUK Level 1 Award in Community Sports Leadership. The award can be delivered by teachers,up to "White Level" or by Badminton England specified tutors to "Gold Level". The content of the course resource is a dedicated tutor manual with PowerPoint slides, a teacher/tutor manual, and a stident CD Rom with worksheets and record book.

BADMINTON England also offers packages for schools or SSP’s to affiliate to BADMINTON England and for schools to attain a Badminton Academy School status.

Various coaching courses are held at regular intervals in Dorset area for both Level 1 & 2 standards

One of the key objectives of the WSP is for audits of badminton activity to be conducted and we are looking to PDM’s for support in this area outlining which schools play badminton in the curriculum; whether after-school clubs are in operation and whether badminton is included in the GCSE programme.
